China is starting to develop as potentially one of the worlds most exciting and attractive boating & yachting markets. Following the fast-rising appeal of houses and luxury cars, Chinese are turning their attention to pleasure boating & yachting. Marina development is a key topic and focus throughout China. Provincial governments, property developers and boat builders are all investing heavily in the belief that the boating & yachting industry will become a part of everyday life in the worlds most populous nation.
Predictions have been made of every 10,000 people, 5.5 will have their own boats & yachts. However others see this as too ambitious, given the fact that boating & yachting and water sports have never been a strong part of the Chinese culture. Nevertheless, as major events such as Beijing Olympics 2008 done and Shanghai World Expo 2010 will be staged in China, many boat building specialists worldwide believe the leisure boat industry in China will be very promising in the future.
The private leisure boating sector remains in its infancy in China, with only 1,000 boats and 5-6 high profile international marinas but with potential for exponential growth. The potential marine market size in China can be related to the large number of marina developments planned. Dozens of large scale marina development are planned at provincial government level and numerous small private marinas.
